Is there also an “e” tag in there for the event? And then from there you can check who published it?

I’m looking through mine (kind 9735 with “p” my pubkey). I notice that buried in the tags is an associated kind 9734, and that sometimes my pubkey follows it and sometimes it does not. Maybe if there’s a pattern there it could help?

Yeah, I think we might need to add something like that to the spec. The `p` in the 9734 the pubkey of the recipient.
