I have a relative that works in a psych ward. Correlation doesn't imply causation, but I was told by my relative there's a correlation between regular weed and psychotic outbreaks.

It may very well be that those with psychotic outbreaks use weed to try to cope with them, I don't know. But weed might not be as harmless as hippies want us to believe.

Cadmium overload causes an internal, cellular zinc deficiency, which inhibits neurological function.

That's probably a big factor; the stresses of life cannot be overcame when the brain is retarded, and the stresses add up.
