Nuanced question. I would consider the Wisconsin variety to be the target. So:

1 sugar cube

3-4 dashes Angostura bitters

1/4tsp water

2 maraschino cherries (luxardo is fancy)

An orange slice (thin round)

Combine the above in a tumbler and muddle(mash up) the fruit and sugar well.

Add 2oz Brandy, ice (clear cube) and fill with a 50/50 mix of lemon lime soda and grapefruit soda (7-up/squirt), gently stir. I like to bring the muddled orange) slice to the side for presentation. And top with one more cherry on a stick.

***** The above version is "press" Which is a combo of the citrus sodas. But there is also

Sweet - just 7up

Sour - just Squirt

Soda - just soda water

And if you really like it sweet replace the water in the muddle with cherry juice!

Rather than to with the cherry snooty folk who'd have preferred a martini will top with a mushroom or tiny brussel sprout. What the hell is wrong with them I don't know.?

Finally... Barbarians might replace the Sherry with Bourbon which is both an insult to the Bourbon and no longer an Old Fashioned. But who an I to judge?
