Serious question. Why do we use the word God?

I believe there is only one God over all humanity. Believing in one Devil over all humanity, not so much. How do I know if the incredible synchronicities witnessed as good or bad is the result of 2 variables (God/Devil) switching between good/bad or only 1 variable (God)?

I believe in God but I don't believe I am arrogant enough to know what God wants or how #God acts.
