The most convincing story I heard was that it was a guy called Dave Kleiman. He had the right creds and personality type etc. He was an associate of Craig Wright.
Kleiman died maybe 10 years ago.
So the story goes that Wright knew what Kleiman was doing, and also knew that his family had a USB with the keys to satoshi's bitcoin. And the whole bullshit pantomime he stirred up was actually to create a legal paper trail that would allow him one day to claim that USB.

Part of why I like the story is that it just does feel like satoshi is dead.
