I guess it depends on the context of the political system they're operating within. Wouldn't, for example, a Centrist Reformist policy be largely ineffectual when there's a very clear and present problem caused by something and that is clearly unpopular amongst a clear majority?

But I agree, a maximalist ideology often causes as many problems as it seeks to address. I just feel inaction, or inadequate action is often equally scary, in that you watch the steady erosion of your home and your values. It's like living through a nightmare in slow motion.
