🛰️ You can talk to the astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) with a $20 dollar ham radio and a little knowledge. 🌌

1. Get Licensed: You need a ham radio license, so start by passing the necessary exam.

2. Gear Up: Equip yourself with a ham radio setup capable of reaching VHF frequencies.

3. Track the ISS: Use online tools to find when the ISS will be overhead. See the link below.

4. Tune In: Dial into the ISS's frequency at 145.800 MHz for voice communication.

5. Call Out: When the ISS is in range, call and wait for a response. Remember, timing is everything due to the short communication window!

Join the unique circle of amateur radio enthusiasts who’ve reached out to space. 📡✨

Going to have to try this...

Here's a link hwere you can enter your location and track the ISS:

I can understand licenses provide some good ground knowlege, but i absolutely reject the necessity of a permission slip from the gov to operate a radio.

I am still thinking about the best way to address this topic. I don't want people to get hung up on the licensing requirement and deprive themselves of the benefits & enjoyment of radio because they don't like the current state of the relationship between the individual and the government.

Without being a jerk, I think it might be worth asking if you also deprive yourself of the benefits of driving cars because the government makes you get a permission slip in the form of a drivers license and enforces the display of license plates (analogous to having to use call sign on air) and regulates their conduct in automobiles.

I think except for rare occasions, this example would provide enough cognitive dissonance for folks to get past the hang up on getting a license for radio.

Thoughts?

Sorry for the long delay in response but Ive had my plate too full to try and write a proper response.

Ultimately I dont believe a drivers license is the same as a ham license.

I agree with neither, however, there are distinct differences:

1. A Drivers license is enforceable if you get pulled over at any time. Typically by a guy with a shiny bit of tin on his chest and a gun.

2a. Anyone can freely operate a vehicle, turn it on, push the throttle, drive it on private property, etc.

Its when a person operates on roads funded by extortion that they are required to have a license. For "public safety" of course. (Obvious fallacies there but thats not on topic)

2b. Somehow though, when hitting the transmit button i am sending radio waves through open air and i should have to dox myself to do so? Who built these radio "air roads?" The undeniably evil government arbitrarily decided that only those that are willing to give away their personal information and anonimity are allowed to use the king's air waves.

3. Ham and radio in general is almost exclusively enforced by gatekeeping fudds. There is little risk in encountering an armed enforcer for operating without a license. The risk is from scooter-bound snitches with nothing better to do than to go on fox hunts to find illegal transmitters.

The government duped a bunch of bootlicking elmers into policing and gatekeeping.

So no, Im sorry but a drivers license and a ham license are only nominally similar in that they both require you to submit to the state your personal information in return for a permission slip to do something anyone in the world can do freely and easily.

The "current state of the relationship between the individual and the government" a relationship that will never change and will only get worse.

Why would anyone submit to their tyranny? Why would someone who supposedly believes in ultimate freedom suggest others do so?
