When you say something in meat space whomever heard it, heard it and if you regret it all you have to do is shut up and that's the end of it nobody else has to hear it from you. The person that heard it has to go and personally repeat it themselves to tell other people. And it's up to the other people hearing it from them to believe it happened or not.
In contrast here in digital space they can share it, re-watch it, copy it and repost it to show everyone your mistake with your face on it. which would be like if someone had a super power to make you repeat it in meat space as many times as they want you to repeat it to show their friends.
On the internet everyone has a recorder with them all the time. Same applies to twitter btw, people take screenshots of stupid takes all the time. Sure you have the chance to spread doubt about it being true or not.
