Because being able to run a bitcoin node is more important than buying a cup of coffee with an on chain transaction.

Without decentralization of nodes, and many of them, bitcoin will die.

(Being devils advocate) storage is cheap. Instead of paying more for storage you get Lightning (with all its shortcomings) Taproot and Ordinals. I wonder if that’s worth not spending $100 more for a larger drive for a node
