The car battery my mum 'borrowed' for about 10 years has finally given up. It originally was in my Audi 80.

A mechanic friend of her's supplied a 54Ah replacement for the price I could get another 74Ah, which is a bit annoying.

Oh well, it was an easy swap, and the car runs again. Mum's happy.

10 years are pretty solid

I think it's more like 15 years old, as I took it from my Audi 80 it was originally fitted to.

I'm currently looking to do an autopsy, but it's one of those "maintenance free" types where you have to chisel the top off to top up the electrolyte. Such a stupid design.

Yeah agreed, at the end another design change to ensure you are not maintaining things rather through them away and get a new one.

I wouldn’t call it stupid in that way but I know what you mean.

Stupid is my frustration with it.

Yes. Maintenance free just means it's not supposed to be maintained.

Sometimes the cell caps are just hidden under the sticker label, but not it this case. I think it's glued on.

Maybe try to warm it up a little so it comes loose with a heater gun
