there must definitely be a better system for assigning leadership of a state than regular elections.

a leader cannot think with the scope of a long-time horizon when they are at the whim of being polled for the immediate results of all their decisions.

we must retvrn to the roman emperor model, with a better approach to succession.

leadership assignment isn't an issue.

Unfettered power is.

Consider a world where any new law may be defeated if 15% of the population votes against it. What war is going to be waged ? What restrictions of freedom may be voted in ? What overspending may be engaged in ?

Many such checks may now be implemented with public key cryptography.

Leaders are fine. Rogue agents as leaders are not.
