On July 30, 1945, the USS Indianapolis traveled through the Philippine Sea after transporting the parts of the atomic bomb destined for Hiroshima.
Shortly after midnight, a Japanese submarine torpedoed the vessel, leaving nearly 900 survivors adrift in shark-infested waters.
For the next four days, the stranded sailors floated helplessly as countless sharks preyed on them. The relentless attacks claimed lives one after another until only 316 men emerged from the ordeal alive.
