Correct. Unless, of course, you send a DM. DMs _are_ encrypted.

It's just that pesky metadata. Is there a NIP for a way to blind recipients? Seems like cryptography must have something for us ala paymentcodes or stealth addresses.

it wouldn't matter because the hardware on which you access it is leaky/surveilled, and agi flows between apps freely without any code debasement. cryptography or code encryption is mostly moot until encrypted hardware is standard.
