A friend of mine is doing a deep dive into vaccine safety studies and I'm getting kind of obsessed. Wow. There really are almost no placebo-controlled studies on childhood shots.

Fair enough. I haven't seen any yet but I guess I'm assuming that some of the original formulations did use them.

No, none of the originals were placebo-controlled. They were just a concoction of muck, and every vaccine since, is simply tested against the previous gunk or at least an adjuvant of some sort.
Two books to read:

Understanding that the system is not actually designed to protect your children seems to be really hard for most people to grasp.

Very very few doctors know anything at all about vaccinology.
Your first paragraph goes for all shallow modern “knowledge”.
The illusion of “common knowledge” reinforces the programming as “fact” even though nobody digs into it.
Looking back it is shocking how well this tactic works. Just getting everyone to repeat bullshit gives it the ultimate aura of credibility.
“Certainly everybody couldn’t be wrong!?” really works.
Not just childhood shots, but all of them. The only one that had a placebo control was Gardacil, but they then proceeded to inject the control group as well, so in effect, not one vaccine study was placebo controlled.
Vaccinology in its entirety, is the most destructive quackery ever perpetrated on humanity.

The circular argument that Siri mentions at the end is incredible - we can no longer do a control group (for this vaccine that never had a control group in its safety testing) because now that it's on the recommended schedule, it would be *unethical* to allow some children to be in the control arm and not get the vaccine.
So - I guess we can't test safety! oh well
