Is that a bad idea long term vs paint job?
I don’t think so personally.
I’d rather go with a vinyl wrap than a paint job, personally.

Preserves the original paint, and easier to re-wrap a panel should you need to… vs repainting. Always better to preserve an original painting than respraying a vehicle
They also have cool metallic and photochromatic colors that would cost a fortune if you had to apply dozens of coats of metallic paints to achieve the same look.
