In 1769, during a raid by Ottoman Turks, the venerable Gherasim of Tismana refused to reveal the location of the monastery's hidden treasures. For his steadfastness and loyalty to his monastic vows, he was brutally tortured and beheaded. His sacrifice protected the sacred artifacts and the spiritual haven of Tismana Monastery.
