"Protein sequence space" — the universe of possible proteins — can be thought of as library, as Dan Dennett does for genome space, which he calls The Library of Mendel as an extension of Borges' Library of Babel. All of these libraries are so vast that English words are insufficient.

#Evolution has to explore that library, and this sounds... hard. The library is beyond vast, and we have been conditioned to think that functional proteins are vanishingly rare.

Yet evolution has found thousands of functional proteins, some marvels of design.

Evolution is easy.

What a great blog! I love the Borges story. And taking it from there to launch into the Big Question: How could this ever work? Really great.
