LND hold the key which then generates the receive addresses. I’m not familiar with start9 but does it give out the seedphrase when the user set it up?

Core Lightning was used, but don’t think a seed phrase was given.

Hmm okay, they use different backup scheme. No BIP39 phrase but a secret file. I have no clue how CLN users usually back up their key, but if your friend never back up the hdd then it is gone.
