The US was founded by white land owning enslavers. It was founded on the genocide of Native Americans, the theft of land and resources, the enslavement of kidnapped Africans. The freedoms enunciated in the Constitution only applied to white men for most of US history. Those who lament that the US "has lost its way" don't understand the history of this country which was founded on protecting the privileges and property of the elite.
