The basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus) is the second-largest living shark and fish, after the whale shark.

Regularly reaches 7–8.5 m (23–28 ft) in length with some individuals reaching 9–11 m (30–36 ft).

Despite their large size and threatening appearance, basking sharks are not aggressive and are harmless to humans.

The basking shark is a ram feeder, filtering zooplankton, very small fish, and invertebrates.
