the power principle of nostr, is a relatively simple and open protocol which is not owned.

there are others. older protocols. they still work, and they are still free.

they are worth understanding.

I'm not aware of other social media-type protocols

XMPP & IRC are useful but don't have the same structure

(everyone broadcasts into a single pool and I decide what stuff I want fed out of the pool)
