I do not know how to NIP, but as a person who gets paid for image work, I would LOVE the ability to post some kind of a note that shows an image with a watermark, and then only “opens“ the unaltered original image after a specific amount has been paid.

Maybe there some kind of clever trick where you hash the original image, use some kind of private key that’s only accessible if the payment is successful…

This kind of detail is over my head…

But I know enough about the big picture, I like to think, to believe that this is not only possible, but probably not that hard?

We could make a bot that posts the first (reduced quality or watermark) image, and then listens for zaps associated to the event, and once a threshold is met, updates the original image URL with the non watermarked version and/or posts a reply with the full version. This is how my Polly the Poll Bot worked to create polls before the NIP was implemented in clients

This approach also compatible with DMs if only want to give image to one individual, but its not a form of DRM. If you need tracing then apply unique watermarks to individual full image per npub sent to so you can trace who leaks something
