This is the surface of Venus, captured by a Soviet probe in the 1970s

A piece of one of these missions just crash landed in the Indian Ocean

I didn’t even know the Soviets had landed crafts on Venus, took photos, recorded sounds, etc, until a few years ago

My grandfather supervised the production of the Venice module, as well as several other Soviet space missions (the Lunokhod, the lunar soil sample, Phobos, and Halley's Comet). In fact, I still find unused spacecraft parts he brought in the garage.
