There is also something called ‘Future Shock’ at play that is unique to the modern man:
Future Shock is the the problems or the uncomfortable feeling that some people experience as a result of very fast changes in technology or society:
‘As computerization spreads across society, the populace at large is subjected to wave after wave of future shock.’
‘Future shock refers to what happens when people are no longer able to cope with the pace of change.’
200 years ago a person would live and die about 10 miles from their birthplace
Today a person can travel upwards of 1.5 million kms in a lifetime.
200 years ago a person would be in communication with ~150 people total.
Today it’s between 10,000 - 100,000 if you include online interactions.
When people struggle to reconcile this rapid change they begin to show signs of ‘Future Shock’ which manifest into all sorts of strange behaviours.
