We don't have server. The main issue is that now the app uses up to 1GB to keep all the content the app needs. Most old phones will definitely struggle with that level of memory use.

Is there any work being done to create a standard local cache that other apps can also use?

Not that I know of. No bounties as well.

It doesn't look like people have any interest in this.
