All participants in any stable system are executing their roles.

On the farm, for the sheep to need the farm, wolves are necessary as an external threat. Now the sheep won’t crave freedom — because freedom is dangerous. The farm protects the sheep from the wolves. And to remind them of the danger, occasional chaos must be allowed, and some sheep need to die demonstratively.

Inside the farm, to keep the sheep obedient, a sheepdog is required. It reminds the sheep to behave and punishes them when they don’t.

The shepherd organized the farm and exploits the herd for resources, giving both the sheepdog and the wolves their jobs.

This same structure is projected onto the human farm — and it works in exactly the same way.
