I can see why you'd want that, and I am not a Christian so take what I say with a grain of salt, but having a state religion turns it into a game of king of the hill, winner take all.
Look at India now, or Ireland a few decades ago; Christians and Catholics blowing each other up, when in America they got along just fine.

The whole "I want complete power, then I'll destroy all deserters!" is kind of like Kung Fu; it makes sense if EVERYTHING goes according to plan.. But once you take a hit to the head, you are even less likely to dodge the next one, etc.
