It's funny how things can come about randomly and grow into gigantic parts of your life.
Like many people I got obsessed with the game Guitar Hero, spending way too many waking hours attempting to hit 100% on songs. Eventually, with a little prodding from my uncle, I picked up a real guitar and I found out quickly how rewarding music can be. It was a distraction I could pour my soul into during some of the more challenging times of my life. It brought about friendships, relationships, and deep meditative states I still can't emulate any other way than by playing a challenging song and letting myself flow with the music.
I was learning how to play guitar, but I didn't realize that I was actually learning what I now believe to be two of the most important skills in life: self learning and self confidence.
Later after I graduated from college and had a total lack of direction I stumbled upon programming. Quickly I saw in it the same elements that existed in music. I was able to teach myself an instrument, so why couldn't I teach myself to write code? Without the experiences of guitar I never would have had the deep faith in my ability to persevere and learn something new on my own.
Now I have a brilliant job programming every day, this entire life I've created for myself is founded upon playing guitar and the self confidence it brought. A skill that was founded on a chance interaction of picking up a video game, something that seemed completely inconsequential at the time, but began a thread that now weaves through every facet of my life.
I'm so excited to see what minor actions that seem trivial today turn into as my life progresses, maybe it'll even be a small interaction with one of you beautiful people.
