Why dont they either ask for more or dont mix ads into the feed (might require co-op with client app)?

They could have done that, if sustainability was the main reason. I don't know if that's the case.
If we are going to have ads inside nostr, at least make advertisers pay in zaps both to the relay owner and those that see the advertisement.
That has been been done with Brave since years and works reasonably well.
