It's hard to find up to date data comparing what the US owes vs what it is owed but here is an old chart showing the US owed more than it owes.

I believe this has reversed (though cannot directly confirm that) but the gap is not as large as you would think as almost all countries have seen their debt blow out. the 32.8T is not a number once the debt owed to the US is removed, but you will be hard pressed to find a reference making that clear. Nobody was saying the US was in the black in 2015 were they?
