Whilst very helpful, nothing beats the finger test.

Get used to how any cut of mean feels by pressing in it with your finger.

Use the thermometer to get you to the temp but press on it with your finger so you developed the ability to 'feel' the meat and it's desired doneness.

This way you won't need a thermometer.
