No locks. One solution is to portage it with a truck and trailer. You'd have to do that multiple times though. Or just have someone pick you up in Souix City.

Not sure of maximum height on that waterway. Can't a mast lay down?
yeah, i'll be getting to that when i have the sats together to buy in... being able to lay down the mast would be a pretty important feature combined with a diesel engine... i've seen some awesome old things, might be a hassle at times due to benig old but the prices for old boats is very low and there's plenty around
a sloop that i can lay down the mast to pass low bridges would be a must, i think... and this applies no matter which terrestrial waterways i might think of navigating (got in my mind to look at maybe danube and nile both
