Figuring it out as you go is youthful and necessary in early endeavors, before you’ve mastered the work that leads to fulfilling your purpose. But seeing the end the whole way through while you work is a sign of a visionary or a master.

A famous tale goes: One day at an exhibition, a novice sculptor marveled at the work of the featured sculptor. In astonishment, he asked the master, “How did you possibly make this?” The master replied that he started with a block of marble, like anyone else, and simply removed the excess.
