For me, I edit and optimise the file before uploading, store it in specific folders and can re-use in other posts by copying and pasting the imagine link, which nostr:npub137c5pd8gmhhe0njtsgwjgunc5xjr2vmzvglkgqs5sjeh972gqqxqjak37w made extremely accessible from the thumbnail.

By optimise, I mostly mean cropping, but I do also reduce image quality when I’m on my desktop.
If I’m out and about I’ll let a client like Damus handle the upload and then move it when I’m back at my desktop.
