I'd also add that society has become very isolationist with the advent of the Internet and social media. COVID really kicked that sumbitch into hyperdrive, too. People are sad and lonely if you look at stats on single and divorced folks.

So those people long for a place to belong. Just lots of interpersonal dynamics at play here.
