Imagine a genie who offers to grant you your wishes. There is only one cavet: you can tell that the genie is incredibly flakey. You deduce that the genie very likely won't grant your wish if it would benefit or impede your goals too much. That's just the biggest factor in how difficult the magic is for the genie to perform, as he explained to you. That means that detonating a random star on the other side of the universe would be about the same difficulty as materializing a glass of water that you probably could have gotten yourself. But granting you insane reality warping powers or something is probably just going to result in the genie giving up and moving on.

Unfortunately you are not able to tell the exact cutoff for what kind of spell the genie is willing to perform, since the genie is too afraid of seeming lazy to give you an unbiased answer. You can ask for as many things as you want, but the genie will disappear forever after you finish asking. What would you wish for? Would you risk asking for a bigger wish?

1. wish: make that becoming god is not my goal

2. wish: make me into god

I probably need someone to force me to make the second wish

Stop trying to break the genie!!!

Ok so let's go through this. Because wanting to be a god is a more of a liability than a benefit when this genie is concerned, wishing not to want to be a god is actually a major benefit, making it much harder to grant and making it much more likely that the genie will flake out on you on wish one.

In other words, wishing not to want to be a god is only slightly easier for the genie to grant than making you a god without changing your values.

Ok my turn to make some wishes. For my first wish, I would wish for world peace. Because I'm a scoundrel and generally don't give a shit about the foreign countries, this wish would probably be granted for me pretty easily.

Haha just kidding! My first wish would be for a slice of pizza. And my second wish, idk, I'd wish that testimony was more reliable or something.

fine, no genie breaking.

I‘ld take dick pills and a nice hooker with big titties.

And as a third wish the genie shall suggest the wish that he would carry out that would help me the most.

OK, I have tried, but I cannot not break the genie.

You're addicted smh, my next wish is for the genie to organize an intervention for you.

Also, the biggest drawback of the genie is the lack of certainty in what level of wish he'd actually try hard enough to pull off. Being able to directly wish for something right on the boundary of what the genie wouldn't flake out on is a huge benefit. Having to apply your own values without making a mistake is also a huge liability, so wishing that away is already pretty serious.

I can't figure out how to quantify an actual calculation though, so maybe that would actually work.

Damn. Then I, too, take a slice of pizza. A decade old one that was bought for 10000 BTC back in the days.

Fair enough! Cheers! 🍕

wait, I don’t want to eat that! I want to sell it to get rich and powerful. If the crypto guys pay millions for a banana think of how much I would get for an original pizza day pizza slice!

if you can ask for ask for as many things as you want, and don't know the cutoff, why not ask for everything you want?

Because it's very unlikely that a wish for "everything I want" would be granted?

Or are you talking about incrementally asking for small things one after another until you hit the limit?

I guess I was thinking just list all the things and see what he grants

Eh I guess I should make it so that everything is granted or ungranted at once so that you can't feel out the limit like that.

The whole point of this thought experiment is to ask a person about the problems in their lives that they don't know any way to solve on their own.

if I ask for multiple things, is it possible that the genie will grant a subset of the things? or is it all or nothing?

It's intended to be all or nothing. That way the number of wishes doesn't get really inflated unless the person genuinely needs a lot of things out of their control to go right.

okay, now that I understand the parameters, I can think about what I would ask

is it easier for the genie to do things that would help other people, if it doesn't directly influence my life?

Absolutely, but mostly if it's people you don't care a whole lot about helping anyway. If you have a very selfless personality and care more about helping others than helping yourself then helping yourself would be the easier wish in this case.

then I wish for $1 trillion in gold to be discovered in Africa

Congratulations. I bet you're pretty jealous of me tho. I wished for a BLT sandwich.

was your wish granted?

Yeah, I think it was pretty close tho. I fuckin' love sandwiches.

I was hoping to trick the genie by crashing the gold market and pumping my bags of bitcoins

I mean, that sounds like a pretty relevant influence on your life...

I was hoping the genie wouldn't know that

Presumably it'd make the magic more difficult regardless of if the genie knew.

you know what, I'll just ask for a sandwich
