this is a pile of cooking fuel and medicine.

i gathered up a large pile of the Alder branches that fell over the winter. Alder trees shed their lower branches as they grow taller. this pile of fallen branches will be my rocket stove cooking fuel from late spring to early fall, and a source of Usnea filipendula lichen which is a naturally occurring anti-bacterial powerhouse that also happens to be an air quality indicator depending on how large it gets.

So, the bigger the lichen the better the air quality?

generally, yes. although thats not absolute. moisture levels and weather affect it as well, but it wont grow in high pollution areas, and if nothing in the environment has changed and it’s getting smaller, the air pollution is increasing.

Learned something today; thanks

The lichen is beautiful too.

right?

i love that color.

It is one of the many reasons why I love western Washington I just find it so beautiful. Whenever I contemplate maybe where I should go next, honestly I can’t think of a better place.

i love it.

People say we have the worst weather. I am quite fond of it.
