My bar for privacy is really high. Many relays are tracking everything you do. Especially the free ones. If you don't use your own relays for things like DMs and encrypted info, you are not private. Relays can't see your data if it is encrypted, but they can see a lot of metadata.

That being said, many other "private" services are not private at all to me, like Signal, SimpleX, etc. Because their servers can also decide to track everything at any point in time.

And how many people do that? Nost also let users define their own relays. That doesn't change anything. You are only private if you run your own server. Otherwise you are just giving your privacy to whoever is running the relays for you.

You have to trust who you choose as relay. On nostr or anywhere else. It's the basis of division of labor in civilization. I delegate baking bread to my baker and have to trust them not to spoil it.
