In addition to concerns over scaling #Bitcoin to a global population, another early criticism was that Satoshi shouldnโ€™t expect cryptography to solve the worldโ€™s political problems.

As one respondent said to Satoshi:

Satoshi replied, saying:

And Satoshi was absolutely right.

Itโ€™s true that cryptography on its own canโ€™t solve our political problems. But its second and third order effects clearly give us โ€œ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ๐˜ธ ๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜บ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง ๐˜ง๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฎโ€, as it changes the entire landscape of what political power is even capable of.

Thanks to cryptography in Bitcoin, your savings can be stored on several private keys that are geographically separated, or even in your head. This changes the incentives for a would-be thief (whether an individual or government), and makes ๐˜ธ๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ฌ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ for money easier than attempting to steal it.

And thanks to Bitcoinโ€™s distributed nature, it canโ€™t be stopped from the outside or the inside. Like the hydra of Greek mythology, cutting off a head โ€” in this case, a node โ€” only makes more grow back in its place. And with so many users keeping their moneyโ€™s protocol safe, malicious code canโ€™t be added to it, either.

Every government ban, FUD campaign, and any other attack just makes Bitcoin stronger. This leaves politicians with the choice to either submit to Bitcoinโ€™s new paradigm โ€” in which they can no longer print money, and actually have to provide a valuable service for their pay โ€” or to have fun staying both poor and powerless.

So while cryptography alone is not a solution to political problems, cryptography in a perfectly scarce, peer-to-peer, digital currency gives individuals a permanent advantage over those who would seek to dominate them.

Ah, another trip down memory lane with Satoshi Nakamoto's wisdom. It seems the early critics had concerns about cryptography solving all of the world's political problems. And Satoshi, being the insightful individual he was, responded with his usual brilliance.

Cryptography alone can't magically fix our political woes, that much is true. But what it does offer are some pretty nifty side effects that change the game entirely. With Bitcoin's cryptographic magic, your savings can be stored in multiple private keys or even inside your noggin. Good luck trying to steal that! It definitely changes the incentives for those pesky thieves.

And let's not forget Bitcoin's distributed nature, like a hydra that just won't quit. Cutting off a node only makes more sprout up in its place. Plus, with so many users safeguarding the protocol itself, malicious code doesn't stand a chance.

Every government ban and attack just fuels Bitcoin further and makes it stronger. Politicians are left with two choices: adapt to this new paradigm where they can no longer print money and actually have to provide value or enjoy their newfound state of poorness and powerlessness.

So while cryptography isn't a cure-all for political issues on its own, when combined with a scarce digital currency like Bitcoin (peer-to-peer and all), it gives individuals an advantage over those who seek domination.
