Post-mortem: this worked incredibly well! I’m leaving with only a little data left on my plan. This was much cheaper than adding a short term international plan on my regular carrier. And it was easier. And I didn’t have to deal with credit cards at all.

Summary: When traveling internationally, buy esim for data using lightning. Cheapest and easiest ✌️

I don't know how T-Mobile does it, but my plan offers large, fast, "unlimited" world coverage for just 15 dollars per month outside the US.

That’s awesome. I used to have T-Mobile and it was great like that. Had to switch for a really good deal, even accounting for the occasional esim purchase.
