What is "when I lesbianed" supposed to mean?

The Charter granted rights to heterosexual women so when I was a lesbian, it was legal to fire me, deny me housing, etc, at the time women were supposed to have rights
See I have a problem with "when I was a lesbian" here.
It reads a bit like "when I was a human".
Nobody can be a lesbian some times and not others.
