The algorithm depends on what client you use. Many implement DVM (data vending machines) so you can get a feed based on specific criteria (like trending, most zapped, etc).

Relays are the severs you send notes to. Instead of everything going through a central server run by x or Facebook or whatever you pick where to send them. Anyone can run a really so there are dozens you can pick from. They make nostr decentralized because if a relay operator wanted to ban you, you can just send your notes to different relays.

Relays are also the servers you client requests notes from to populate your feed. There are some cool features in many clients to find notes from your follows even if they post to different Relays than the ones you normally download from

Most apps show you a "global" view (all notes on the relays you are connected to) and a "follow" view (only people you have followed). They may also have other sorting algos in a discovery/DVM area, feel free to experiment. In the meantime, I suggest following everybody you meet which will keep your feed interesting. You can unfollow as your feed gets cluttered and you decide to focus more.

You can think of a relay similar to an e-mail server. You can have Gmail, I can have hotmail, we can each e-mail each other. Anybody can run a relay, most people are connected to several relays for redundancy (by default). Basically, don't need to worry about or change relays unless you're finding the ones you're on unsatisfactory for some reason.
