I just read a newspaper article that used affect instead of effect all the way through. It seems as if newspapers rely on spellcheck, but don't know enough about grammar to see their own mistakes.

How are younger and less able readers to know correct English if what they read gets it so wrong?

I learnt fer't speak proper English* as a wee nipper, burreye 'ad fer't learn posh English fer't go to uni 'cos they dint speak proper down yon.

* Lancashire was then the most populated county, until Attila the Hen, so by rights, Lanky IS proper English.
