> Baker was recommending a story condemning “tribalism,” when what we are really seeing here is the vitriol of an authoritarian movement and the increasing condemnation from those who are appalled by it

Yeah, nah. We're seeing two brands of authoritianism duking it out for control of an Empire in its post-Death Star decline, and two tribes of partisans, each only recognising the danger of one of them. True, only one of them has full control of a political party. So far...

But Robert Reich reminds us that the Democrats' commitment even to its own internal democracy has hardly been unwavering;

"... such as what the Democratic National Committee did to Bernie Sanders in 2016"

... and that;

"Without two parties committed to democratic means to resolve differences in ends, the party committed to democracy is at a tactical disadvantage. If it is to survive, eventually it, too, will sacrifice democratic means to its own ends."

Final thought; the biggest enemy of US democracy is the Two Party System. Without an easy way for new parties to enter mainstream politics, and corrupted parties to be sidelined by the electorate in their favour, all anti-democratic forces need to do is enter one of the Two Parties in sufficient numbers to corrupt it.

Most people only seem to have noticed this strategy at with the election of Agent Orange. But some noticed it beginning with the Tea Party:
