Anything that can be used non-consumptively as a trade settlement is money. In no case was there a currency that WAS a final settlement. Gold coins for instance are not currency, they are literally a monetary asset.

Physical USD is a fiat asset. Assets ARE the backing. Digital USD is not an asset it is a coupon redeemable for the asset (physical dollars).
