The amount of time and effort. Live the attention to detail. If there wasn't mass being held i would have cought the ornate gold leaf inside. Beautiful.
My father was a bricklayer. No fancy carving like that, but he did do some work with raw stone occasionally for special projects. I helped him as a laborer. I still can't imagine how much work that would have taken. We've lost something in the modern age.
"Age of cathedrals" - meant each cathedral was built over centuries
(But the Sagrada Familia is "under construction" from 150 years)

Looks like Monet's series of paintings about Rouen cathedral.
But this one maybe in Spain, regarding the huge amounts of ornaments.
