I thought this was fake so I had to look it up...

โ€œThis project from the HALO Trust aims to safeguard the lives and livelihoods of Ukrainians, including women and internally displaced persons, by addressing the threat of explosive ordnance present across vast areas of the country,โ€ the item reads. โ€œProject activities include conducting non-technical surveys and subsequent manual clearance in targeted communities; providing capacity building to key national stakeholders; and establishing a gender and diversity working group to promote gender-transformative mine action in Ukraine.โ€

If that's not the most gobboldy-goop nonsense I have ever read. Wtf is happening.

Manual clearance is legit poking around with a tent peg / bayonet until you find a mine. Survey can give locations of the obvious ones, but they always miss a few. Then you have to identify which sort it is, and remove it without setting it off.

According to my old boss, if you survive the first few lifts you'll survive a long time, and the pay is amazing. But that everyone who works in EOD is mad.

I looked at him straight-faced and he laughed and said "including me".

We have robots and mine flails now, in rich countries, but someone still has to poke around afterwards.

Clearly in the past it wasn't inclusive enough! That's why people did not last long. The dystopia keeps on giving.
