no
now guess without looking, what nostr address am i using actively?
🧄hmmm
I don’t care which Nostr address you’re using. I care about the centralizing effect of established unique usernames, and the bullshit name squatting and sabotage that would occur if it were to be attempted.
the main thing i’m trying to ask through the memes and all of this is, should and could we have unique usernames.
npub would be the IP behind it, username the DNS unique handle on it
For what purpose?
Here’s a solution to the issue of impersonators. Nostur also shows their previous username.

🤔 didn’t know that, hmm
i’m mostly curious about impersonation prevention that will come in the future. don’t think will be constantly checking users like that, and i’m more after a ‘first-glance’ solution 💜
What makes you the authentic Tanel that you should be the only one in the world? What if I already had a company named Tanel founded 50 years ago, and I wanted to use that name because it’s been a well established brand for so long? Or what about more common names like Jack? Who decides who has right to it? What happens to it when you don’t want it any more or when you die? Any process by which those things could be decided/controlled for everyone else on the network would be a centralizing force.
Fair point, and a really nice explanation 💜 Thank you for this.
That explains a lot of the ownership, or the lack of any party truly owning them angle.
Still curious what do you think of the impersination/scam worries?
There are at least 2 issues to solve with with impersonation. 1) there is the issue of me needing to identify that you are indeed the actual person I want to follow BEFORE I follow you, and 2) there is the issue of my existing followers deciding to impersonate someone else AFTER I follow them.
For the first issue, a combination/variety of solutions are fine. Web of trust (mutual friends), NIP-05 and other 3rd party verifiers (like sharing their npub on another platform where I already follow them, on their websites, etc), and even personally talking to verify if that’s an option.
For the second issue, one solution could be for Nostr clients to treat your Nostr contact list more like your phone contacts. For example, everyone in my phone book has a different phone number, but I may know multiple people named Jack, so I add something in my contacts app that differentiates them from each other—a last name, company affiliation, or even something like “Jack-guitar guy”. There’s no reason for that info to change in MY contact book unless I want it to because it’s only for my reference. If Jack changes his name and broadcasts that to Nostr, then my Nostr client should see that and simply alert me to the change and ask me if I want to update his contact info in my contact list or ignore it.
Like a nickname
Could set it as bracket in clients.
i bookmarked this, wanna take some time off later to give a proper response to nostr:npub1lrnvvs6z78s9yjqxxr38uyqkmn34lsaxznnqgd877j4z2qej3j5s09qnw5 💜
Yes like a nickname, except that it should be the primary name displayed to me for each contact in my contact list. Initially it would be set to their actual username, unless I customize it. Once’s it’s saved in my contacts, then it should only change in my contact list if I authorize it to be updated when you broadcast a new name to the network. If I don’t authorize it to change in my list, then I just keep seeing whatever nickname I have set for you.

Wouldn't really matter, would it?
This network is being built on trust. Those following you would likely not follow a personification. It isn't Impossible, just very difficult to achieve and ultimately fruitless around here.
