FIREPLACE QUESTION

WHAT IS THIS?

It slides left and right a hair, seemingly opening and closing a vent. But there's no exhaust there, it's just some kind of compartment. No clue what it does. Open when fire or closed when fire? Anyone?

Not 100% certain, but may likely be a temporary storage chamber you can sweep ashes into...

Well there's a trap door at the back we dump ashes into -- goes all the way down to basement. So, not sure.

it's almost certainly an air intake then, and is probably clogged, so if you can open it and clean it, your fire will burn hotter and more cleanly

Thanks #plebs! Crowdsourced answers. Love it.

Our fireplace has a built-in metal firebox with air ducts surrounding it. As the air in the surrounding chambers is heated, it rises by convection, drawing cool air in from two entry vents at floor level and allowing that air to flow out through a vent just above and under the mantle.😁

i'm a born hacker... if there is a button, a lever, a slide, i tweak it and see what happens

Is there a 2nd vent above the chimney? if yes then this chimney has a direct vent system. If not then I don't know 😉

Nothing above the chimney but sky (haha). No second vent above fireplace opening. 🤔

Ok so not what I thought. A direct vent system inhales fresh air from the room, circulates it around the chimney to exhaust warm air from a 2nd vent. Nifty system.

It could be an out air intake. Fireplace suck air. If there isn't a vent ducting outside sir directly to the fireplace, it will pull it through anywhere it can that cold air then mixes with the warm air in the house..

those things usually are airvents that help increase oxygen to burn with

but if you can open it up and clean it out, maybe open it up and clean it out, that might help your fire work better

Must be it, right? No venting from it, just provides a little extra O2 for when fire burns...guess that must be it. TY.

i <3 carbon burning devices, they are my favourite thing

as a child i was fascinated by all kinds of combustion
