Saw that claim about Mario and Peach being “just very good friends.” Nintendo said the same thing about Zelda and Link, which literally doesn’t make sense for some of the Zelda games. Skyward Sword even has romance dialogue options, for crying out loud. I guess it's just Nintendo wanting to put up a family-friendly image or maybe it has something do to with the movie adaptations.
